Designed and built by Qanstruct in close collaboration with the creative minds at Moose, this three-storey office development in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Cheltenham embodies the company’s playful spirit and ‘out of the box’ approach, mixing practical design elements and sound construction with a tonne of fun!
The new centre provides a new workplace for more than 100 staff, and is the new administration hub for a warehousing and distribution operation which sees some of Australia’s best loved toys, including Mighty Beanz, Angry Birds and the Trash Pack, distributed to more than 75 countries.
A rich exterior façade welcomes the visitor with its softly curving entrance, its boldly coloured aluminium battens hinting at the innovation which characterises the development throughout. Inside, an industrial aesthetic complements the free form of the architecture in the expression of building services and the creation of lofty spaces between ‘floating’ ceiling elements.
Creating a healthy work environment was fundamental, so an abundance of natural light was a prerequisite, with staff able to step out of the ground floor lunch room to a sun-bathed courtyard with ‘green wall’, and from there to the bocce area and basketball half court, aerobics room and gym.
These are complemented by practical – yet imaginative – areas from toy testing rooms and workshop, a flexible workstation environment which allows staff to move easily from their desks to more informal, collaborative work spaces, and even a ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ elevated cubby-house meeting room with whiteboard walls.
Importantly, the building ticks all the boxes on the company’s ‘Sustainability Scorecard’ with Qanstruct’s GreenStar experience helping inform the environmental considerations. Among its sustainable features are energy efficient LED lighting with CBUS controller, double performance glazing and insulated façade, zoned split system heating and cooling, rainwater harvesting and water efficient landscaping, solar tube lighting and solar boosted hot water.
The Award winning construction quality was carried through finishes and fit-out, to create a truly unique space which is already demonstrating its ability to foster innovation and bold thinking, while reducing stress and improving staff well-being.
