D’Orsogna was founded by Italian migrant brothers Tommaso and Giovanni D’Orsogna as a small butcher shop in West Perth in 1949. It has now grown to become one of Australia’s largest small goods manufacturers employing over 550 people with its products well represented at leading food services businesses including Woolworths and Coles. D’Orsogna is growing its existing Victorian manufacturing footprint with a $60M investment in a new turnkey facility at Merrifield Business Park, a joint venture between MAB Corporation and Gibson Property Corporation in Melbourne’s north.
D’Orsogna’s Managing Director Brad Thomason said “Merrifield is partnering with leading Melbourne industrial construction company Qanstruct to design and deliver a highly specialised manufacturing facility, just for us. We have ambitious expansion plans for the business over the next few years. The scale and flexibility of the Merrifield site provides us with an opportunity to essentially double our manufacturing footprint”.
Construction works for the 10,858m2 food manufacturing facility located on the three-hectare greenfield site has commenced after a formal sod turning ceremony by the Victorian Minister for Industry and Employment, Ben Carroll. Qanstruct Director Damien Toppi said “Partnering from an early stage, Qanstruct provided early contractor involvement to develop a detailed design and cost budgets for this bespoke facility prior to formal engagement on the project. We look forward to delivering a best in class food grade manufacturing facility”. The smallgoods facility design focuses on strict hygiene requirements throughout each phase of the manufacturing process while also incorporating the specialist building services components required for the food processing equipment. The construction delivery will carefully consider an integrated approach for the installation of the process equipment which will complete the turnkey nature of the facility.
Construction is due for completion in December 2018.
